Chapter Fifteen
Kathleen Brown was pleased when the porter told her Fiona Mullally was in the waiting room for her half-past eight morning appointment. She approved strongly of punctuality, something not well-practiced by her clients. She had a busy day ahead and Fiona was her first appointment.
Kathleen went to the waiting room and called Fiona to come to her office. Fiona followed as she went back to her desk and sat opposite in a rickety wicker chair.
Kathleen refreshed herself with a glance at the file, although she felt she was sufficiently familiar with the case. She was pleased to see that Fiona was well-turned out in jeans and top and a nice blue jacket with a small discreet handbag.
“How are things going for you, Fiona?” she asked kindly.
“Fine, Ganby House is pleasant and I enjoy the city,” Fiona replied cautiously.
“Relax Fiona,” Kathleen said, picking up on her nervousness. “These meetings will be less frequent as time passes and you find your feet. Tell me, did you enjoy your visit from your English cousins?”
“Yes, they were kind and they bought me some nice clothes. But they’ve gone back now.”
“You look very smart. Is that a Gucci bag?”
“I think so, my cousins took me to a shop called Brown Thomas. It was very posh.”
“Yes, indeed,” Kathleen said. She didn’t mention that on a social workers salary, it was rare for her to visit such an upmarket establishment.
“Any worries?” Kathleen asked.
“No job yet but the Jobseekers Allowance is enough to get by on.”
“Do you budget carefully, Fiona?”
“I have to.”
“Have you been to any job interviews?”
“Not yet. The Jobcenter said they’d have a list for me next week when they have my file sorted.”
“Good, any questions, Fiona?”
“If I had to go away for a while, would that be alright?” Fiona asked.
“Like to your English cousins?”
“Yes.”
“Well, Fiona, I’m here to help you settle in. But if you are coping and wish to visit, that’s OK. Let me know your plans so I don’t worry about you. It’s important if we have an appointment that you turn up. Otherwise, I’ll have to send out a search party.”
“I understand,” Fiona said.
Kathleen was happy. Fiona seemed relaxed and coping. She flicked the file. “One other thing. The file indicates you had periods of disorientation where you thought you heard voices. Says ‘thinks she can talk to fairies?’”
“That was when I was a child. I changed when I became a teenager.”
“The reason I ask Fiona is because when you go out into the real world, it can be stressful and this stress can bring on things thought buried. Do you understand?”
‘Yes, I do, and if I have any such episode, I’ll seek help,” Fiona said, looking Kathleen confidently in the eye as she spoke.
“One other thing, Fiona, and this is important. Were you at Mount Jerome Cemetery recently?”
“Yes, I went to see if I could find my mother’s grave. I understand the nuns used a paupers plot for girls who died in their care.”
“You need to write to the nuns and ask for details, Fiona.
